New Jersey Courts
Federal Court
There are 3 Federal Courthouses that serve the District of New Jersey. They are located in Newark, Trenton and Camden. Both civil and criminal cases are filed in these courts.
Felony Criminal Cases
There are 21 superior courts located in the State of New Jersey. These courts are separated by the county that they have jurisdiction over. Superior court matters are broken down into two separate areas which are heard in either the Law Division or Chancery Division. The Law Division, Criminal Part hears cases where a person is accused of a felony/Indictable Offense. These crimes are categorized as First Degree, Second Degree, Third Degree and Fourth Degree crimes.
Municipal Court
There are 539 municipal courts located in the State of New Jersey. These courts have jurisdiction over municipal ordinance violations, disorderly persons offenses, and traffic and motor vehicle violations.
Family Court
The Chancery Division of Superior Court hears all family cases. Family court has jurisdiction over matters involving divorce, child support, paternity, custody, parenting time, domestic violence, juvenile delinquency, family crisis, foster care placement, kinship legal guardianship, abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights and adoption.
